Nominations are now open for the 2025 NSW Premier's Prizes for Science and Engineering

The Premier's Prizes for Science & Engineering recognise research excellence for cutting-edge work that has generated economic, environmental, health, social and technological benefits for NSW. Scientists, engineers and teachers working in NSW universities, research organisations, government agencies and primary and secondary schools are encouraged to submit a nomination for their relevant prize category. 

Outsmarting antibodies to enable successful delivery of gene therapy

By masking a virus that delivers genes to cells, more people may be able to receive life-changing and life-saving treatments. Gene therapy aims to replace or inactivate the faulty gene so that it stops giving the body the wrong instructions. Associate Professor Grant Logan at the Children’s Medical Research Institute is researching a gene therapy approach that uses viruses as delivery systems to courier healthy genes to a person’s cells. This work has been supported by an Early Mid-Career Grant from the Office for Health and Medical Research. 

A cardiovascular researcher who is advancing women’s heart health

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women worldwide and second to dementia as the leading cause of death for women in Australia. Passionate about advancing women’s cardiovascular health, Associate Professor Sarah Zaman, an Academic Interventional Cardiologist at Westmead Hospital, is engaged in research to improve patient care, outcomes and policy for women with heart conditions. 

Helping to close the gap in paediatric ear health for Aboriginal children

Up to one in four Aboriginal children will experience middle ear infections, known as ‘otitis media’ which can lead to hearing loss. To improve diagnosis of otitis media and inform precision treatment options, Dr Guy Cameron, a proud Wailwan man, postdoctoral researcher and Indigenous Imaging Fellow at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Medical Research Institute, is leading a research project in the region. 

NSW Health update

Round 13 of the Medical Devices Fund now open

Up to $8 million in funding is available for Round 13 to progress new and innovative medical devices and related technologies in NSW towards commercialisation. The Fund is open to individuals, companies, public and private hospitals, medical research institutes, universities and the medical devices industry. 

Two online information sessions about the Fund will be held on 16 and 23 April 2025. The sessions will provide info on the application process and help answer questions you may have.

Preliminary applications close 13 May 2025 at 5pm AEST. 

Applications now open for Cardiovascular Senior and Early-Mid Career Researcher Grants

The Cardiovascular Research Capacity Program funds high quality cardiovascular research in NSW to drive scientific discoveries, support the development of innovative therapies, and improve health outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease. Applications close 10 September 2025.

The Office for Health and Medical Research and the NSW Cardiovascular Research Network are hosting a workshop to support researchers with their grant applications on 6 May 2025. 

Round 12 of the Medical Devices Fund recipients announced

The recipients of Round 12 were announced by the Hon. David Harris, MP for their ground-breaking medical devices. The innovative technologies include a lifetime-lasting heart valve replacement, bionic eyeglasses and a 3D printer for on-the-spot skin regeneration. The funding awarded will help accelerate the use of their devices to improve patient care in NSW.

NAT-Net has released this survey to learn the key interests, expertise, and suggestions across the sector and to help shape the future direction of the network. NAT-Net aims to make groundbreaking discoveries while developing and promoting alternative methods that reduce the use of animals in health and medical research. 

NSW Health Research Handbook 1.1 release

The updated NSW Health Research Handbook 1.1 and an initial set of Standard Operating Procedures have been released. These resources are critical tools to guide safe, ethical, and high-quality human research across NSW Health organisations.

This release also marks the beginning of our second 6-month consultation period to refine these resources. Your insights are crucial to ensuring the Handbook and SOPs are practical and user-friendly, we encourage feedback to be submitted by 1 July 2025
