NSW Health Research and Innovation Strategy announced

The NSW Government has released the NSW Health Research and Innovation Strategy 2025 to 2030, an ambitious forward-looking plan for research and innovation in NSW. The vision of the 5-year plan is to improve health outcomes for the people of NSW and establish the state as the nation’s innovation and investment powerhouse for health and medical research. 

Launched by the Minister for Medical Research David Harris, the new Strategy will enable greater collaboration between the NSW Government, health, academic, and industry sectors and provides a roadmap to help achieve a future with positive economic, social and environmental impacts. How ‘genetic scissors’ are helping researchers identify new drug targets for child cancers

How can we interrupt the growth of cancer cells with new and more targeted drugs to treat cancer in children? This question is central to the research of Associate Professor Paul Ekert at Children’s Cancer Institute. By understanding how genetic mutations impact cancer growth and using cutting edge technology to alter that process, research by Luminesce Alliance aims to advance new drug therapies for paediatric cancers. 

How does difficult-to-treat asthma impact the mental health and physical health of Australian adults?

By addressing knowledge gaps about the prevalence, impacts and challenges of difficult-to-treat asthma, research led by Professor Helen Reddel and her team at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research aims to improve patient treatment and outcomes.

Future-proofing the NSW medical research workforce with the Clinical Trials Register of Staff

At the heart of medical research in NSW are the dedicated staff who conduct clinical trials which advance new healthcare treatments, diagnostic tools and service delivery systems. To better understand this diverse workforce the Office for Health and Medical Research is mapping healthcare workers involved in clinical trials. This data is collected via a new platform called the Clinical Trials Register of Staff.

Applications for the Medical Devices Fund are closing soon

The Fund offers grants to support products across a range of applications throughout the medical device product life cycle. Progressing new and innovative medical devices towards commercialisation will help support improved patient care in NSW and generate economic and social benefits to the state. Recordings of the 2025 information sessions are now available.

Preliminary applications close 13 May 2025 at 5pm AEST. 

EOIs now open for Round 9 of the Translational Research Grants Scheme

The Translational Research Grants Scheme supports health and medical research projects that have the potential to be translated into policy and practice, including research that can be generalised and scaled in other local health districts and speciality health networks across NSW. Grants are valued up to $500,000 and are awarded over 2.5 years. Applicants employed by local health districts, speciality health networks, NSW Ambulance and NSW Health Pathology are eligible to apply.   

Expressions of interest close 1 July 2025. 

Prevention Research Support Program Round 7 priority research streams briefing sessions

This grant scheme, administered by the Centre for Epidemiology and Evidence, funds NSW research organisations conducting prevention and early intervention research. Three priority research streams have been identified for Round 7 and an online briefing will be held for each stream commencing mid-May 2025.

Applications now open for Cardiovascular Senior and Early-Mid Career Researcher Grants

The Cardiovascular Research Capacity Program funds high quality cardiovascular research in NSW to drive scientific discoveries, support the development of innovative therapies, and improve health outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease. 

Applications close 10 September 2025.
