RNA Research and Pilot Manufacturing Facility for NSW

Construction has begun on a cutting-edge Research and Pilot Manufacturing Facility at Macquarie University, supported by a $96 million NSW Government investment. This world leading centre, set to open in 2026, will advance RNA-based vaccines and therapies, boosting NSW’s leadership in global health innovation and creating high-tech jobs.

How research in phage therapy is addressing the challenge of antibiotics resistance

As antibiotics resistance remains an ongoing global challenge, phage therapy is emerging as an important viable alternative to treat resistant infections. Aleksandra Petrovic Fabijan is a biologist and leading researcher engaged in phage therapy research at the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. Her work has been supported by OHMR through the Early-Mid Career Grants Program.

Harnessing virtual reality to restore touch perception after spinal cord injury

Professor Sylvia Gustin's groundbreaking research reveals that the brain can respond to touch even if the patient can't feel it. This discovery led to Project Avatar, which uses virtual reality and sensory feedback to potentially restore touch and mobility. OHMR is supporting the project via a Spinal Cord Injury Research Grant, which may help restore touch and mobility to some of the 20,000 Australians living with complete spinal cord injury. 

Spotlight on: a production scientist working in a clean room
 
Through a range of different funding, OHMR is supporting clinical trials and research in gene therapy. Special clean rooms must be used to produce these gene therapies and other advanced therapeutic products, to ensure that they are made to the highest standard and are safe for patients. We spoke to Hoda Zarei, a Production Scientist working in the Gene and Cell Medicine Facility based at the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, to understand more about what happens in a clean room.

NSW Cardiovascular Research Capacity Program Collaborative Grants

The 2024 round of the Cardiovascular Collaborative Grants are now open. The two-year grant is targeted at NSW-led collaborations involving multiple institutions to achieve success with national funding opportunities. A total of up to $750,00 may be awarded per grant. 

A briefing for applicants will be held online on Friday 27 September from 12pm – 1pm. Please email MOH-OHMRGrants@health.nsw.gov.au to register your interest.

Grant applications close 6 December at 5pm AEDST. 

Evaluation of the NSW Health Early-Mid Career Grant Program 2024

The Office for Health and Medical Research has released the first evaluation of the NSW Health Early-Mid Career (EMC) Grant Program. The independent evaluation undertaken by the Hunter Medical Research Institute, has shown that the Early-Mid Career Program, one of the first of its kind in Australia, succeeded in its key aims and represents excellent value to NSW (a return of seven dollars for every dollar invested).

The Clinical Trials Register of Staff (CiTRoS) was created by OHMR to gain a better understanding of Australia’s dynamic clinical trials workforce. Help us to identify any gaps and to work through improving our workforce together. It should only take 5-10 minutes to create your own CiTRoS database record. Please also share this opportunity with any colleagues working in research.
